No longer Number 1
I watched MOTD this morning which is now my usual routine. Can't be bothered with football on a Saturday anymore.
Three games in there was a perfect example of why football is no longer my favourite sport after 44 years at the Number 1 spot.
Mark Nobel who is a fine example of a club player. 1 club man who tries
his heart out. He has had to blatantly cheat to get his club back into
the game against a rampant AFC Bournemouth. The same club who were twice
victims of dubious decisions at Anfield
on Monday. No foul on him but goes down in the first minute of the
second half to earn then take the penalty to put his club back in the
game. Fortunately the deserving team did win this time. But this is not a
dig at Mark Nobel , THEY ALL DO IT NOW .. at all clubs at all levels. I
have seen 9 year old boys dive in the under 10's league and have
parents more or less applaud it.
So where did we get this wonderful skill??
It seems we inherited this skill when importing overseas players into
our leagues in the late 1980's and early 1990's. It was with a great
pride in the 1980's I watched (in particular) Liverpool ... a team made
up of English Irish Scottish & a Welshman win multiple trophies in
Europe. They used to watch with a mixture of curiousness and
laughability as all these various Italians & Spaniards would roll
around and earn laughable free kicks and try get players sent off. Their
attitude was to say .. Take your ill earned free kick and we'll still
beat you fair and square. Liverpool did , as did both Aston Villa and
NottinghamForest in the European cup. Leeds Utd were blatantly robbed by
the ref in Paris against Bayern Munich in 1975. as were Derby County in
the away leg against Juventus in 1973 with claims from Clough that the
Italian club had bribed the match officials, calling them "cheating
bastards".
Now we are as guilty as them at every level.
The premier league is now a modern day version "The Emperor's New
Clothes" . It is not as good as it thinks it is. Try watching it with
the sound off and count the errors , and empty seats (of which more
appear every season).
The reason English clubs haven't won the
Champions League recently is because they are not the best teams. The
best league in terms of atmosphere and support is the
Fußball-Bundesliga. And the Germans don't rip off their fans. Crystal
Palace is the only club I currently have a soft spot for. Their fans
really do always try create an atmosphere and just enjoy the game and
the fact they are in the top tier.
An English team will not win
the Champions League this season and no doubt UEFA will do their very
best to try insure an El Classico Final ..
I am happy to say my Number 1 sports spot is now filled by Horse Racing .They don't "kiss the
badge" then disappear over the horizon to a bigger club the following
week..
