America’s top drone pilots, who target and kill insurgents from the
safety of US military bases thousands of miles away, are to be
recognised with new remote-action military honours.
The decision was announced yesterday by the Pentagon, after a lengthy and often angry debate.
Drones
have played an increasingly important part in the war against Islamic
State in Syria and Iraq. The Predator and the Reaper, both armed with
Hellfire missiles and precision-guided bombs, are also frequently used
against terrorists in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia.
It
is estimated that as many as 6,000 specifically targeted individuals
have been killed by the CIA and by the American military since armed
drones were first deployed in 2004.
The idea of an award for drone
pilots was raised in 2013 by Leon Panetta, the defence secretary at the
time, but was opposed by fighter pilots and veterans of the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan. They complained that drone operators, sitting in
the relative comfort of their work stations on a home base in America,
far from the dangers associated with the battlefield, should never be
compared to frontline combat personnel.
Mr Panetta’s proposal,
raised shortly before he stepped down as defence secretary, was so
controversial that Chuck Hagel, his successor, immediately scrapped the
idea. He did, however, order a review.
Mr Panetta had wanted to
honour drone pilots with a “distinguished warfare medal”, but outraged
veterans said that it would rank higher than the Bronze Star and Purple
Heart.
Ash Carter, the current defence secretary, has since agreed
that a specially designated medal is justified. The operators serving
at Creech air force base, in Nevada, and at other locations around the
US, will be honoured if their actions have a direct effect on the
battlefield thousands of miles away. The award will include a special
“R” designation to acknowledge the remote-action role.
The
Pentagon said in a statement that it was necessary to recognise the
growing use of remote missions in combat operations. The award will also
cover personnel engaged in other forms of remote military action,
including cyber warfare missions.
