Red Arrows Catch The Light

The Red Arrows are training for the forthcoming display season in the skies over their base at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.

Winter training usually starts in October and continues until March or April, when the team will move to an overseas location with more settled weather, allowing them to make the most of their flying hours as they perfect their formations.

Each pilot flies three sorties a day, five days a week. The formations start off with three or four of the team’s Hawk T1 jets but grow as training progresses.

This year, two new pilots have joined the team. They are Flight Lieutenants Toby Keeley and Dan Lowes. Flight Lieutenant Chris Lyndon-Smith returns to the Red Arrows after a previous stint with them. All three are experienced fast jet pilots who have served in the RAF’s frontline units.

Last year the Red Arrows performed almost 70 displays in the UK before embarking upon a two-month overseas tour, their biggest for a decade. They gave more than 20 displays around Asia – including their first in China - and the Middle East.
